There are lots of other picture formats apart from GIF. Just to name a few:
BMP, TIF, TGA, JPG, PCX, and XPM. Their characteristics are mainly differed
by the following:
- Number of colours supported (GIF supports 256 (8-bit) colors)
- Performance on data compression (some formats have no compression which
always end up a very large picture file)
- Performance when viewing (does the format require complex viewers that
slow down the display process?)
- The extent of software support (from merely viewers to image processors
and desktop publishers)
