You can mount the drives in any of the approved orientations. Allow
a minimum clearance of 0.030-inches should be allowed around the
entire perimeter of the drive for cooling airflow.
The ST9051A and ST9077A are built with metric mounting screw threads.
Drives with metric threads can be distinguished by a notch in the
mounting boss. Screw insertion depth is limited to 0.150 inches (3.81
mm) maximum on the side mounting holes and 0.190 inches (4.82 mm)
maximum on the bottom mounting holes. The screw size allowed for the
bottom-mounting and the side-mounting holes is M3X0.5.
Note: Earlier versions of the ST9051A were built with standard
threads, size 4-40 UNC-2B. Drives with standard threads do not have a
notch cut into the mounting boss.
Caution: Do not exceed 3 inch-Ibs torque for mounting screws.
The ST9052A, ST9096A and ST9144A are built with metric mounting screw
threads. Screw insertion depth is limited to 0.15 inches (3.81 mm)
maximum on the side mounting holes and 0.19 inches (4.82 mm) maximum
on the bottom mounting holes. The screw size allowed for the
bottom-mounting and the side-mounting holes is M3X0.5.
Caution: Do not exceed 3 inch-Ibs torque for mounting screws.
AT interface
------------
The ST9144 family AT drives use the industry-standard IBM AT task
file interface. The drives support both 8-bit and 16-bit data
transfer and have no DMA capability. All data transfers are done
through programmed I/O.
Up to two drives can be daisy-chained (Master/Slave) on the same
host bus.
AT interface cable
------------------
Maximum cable length is 18 inches (457 mm). It is recommended that
the connectors be keyed by inserting a plug into the pin-20 location
of each interface connector.
AT interface connector requirements
-----------------------------------
The drive connector is a 44-conductor connector with 2 rows of 22
male pins on 0.079 inch (2 mm) centers. The mating cable connector is
a 44-conductor nonshielded connector with 2 rows of 22 female
contacts on 0.079 inch (2 mm) centers. It is recommended that the
connectors be keyed by inserting a plug into the pin 20 location of
each interface connector. Strain relief is recommended.
Recommended connector: Molex part number 87259-4413 or equivalent.
DC power specifications
-----------------------
Power is supplied to the drive through pin 41 and pin 42, ground
through pin 43 in the interface connector. Pin 44 is reserved.
Remote LED
----------
The drive indicates activity to the host through the /DASP line (pin
39) on the AT interface. This line may be connected to a drive status
indicator driving an LED to 5 VDC. This line has a 30 mA nominal
current limit.
Shipping zone
-------------
At power-down the read/write heads automatically move to the shipping
zone. The head and slider assembly park indide of the maximum data
cylinder.
Input Noise
-----------
Maximum permitted input noise ripple 150 mV (peak-to-peak)
Maximum permitted input noise 10 MHz
Onboard drive diagnostics
-------------------------
At power-on the drive executes a series of diagnostics tests. A
series of LED flashes on the system panel indicates a failure.

UL/CSA listing
--------------
The ST9144 family drives are listed in accorance with UL 1950 and CSA
C22.2 (950-M-89), and meet all applicable sections of IEC 380, IEC
435, IEC 950, VDE 0806/08.81 and EN 60950 as tested by TUV-Rheinland,
North America.
Warning: The ST9144 family drives are devices intended to be contain-
ed solely within a personal computer or similar enclosure and not
attached as an unenclosed external device. As such, the drive is
considered to be a subassembly even when it is individually marketed
to the customer.
Acoustics
---------
ST9052A: 30dBA maximum (sound pressure) in Idle mode, at 1 meter.
All other ST9144 family drives: 33 dBA maximum (sound pressure) in
Idle mode, at 1 meter.
Seek time definition
--------------------
Seek time is a true statistical average (at least 5,000 measurements)
of seek time, less overhead. All measurements are made with nominal
power at sea level and 25*C ambient temperature.
Track-to-track seek time is an average of all possible single-track
seeks in both directions. Average seek time is measured by executing
seek commands between random sector addresses.
Full-stroke seek time is one-half the time needed to seek from the
first data sector to the maximum data sector and back to the first
sector.
Note. Host overhead varies between systems and cannot specified.
Controller overheads for the drives is 1 msec typical.
