Spindle motor synchronization
-----------------------------
You can synchronize the spindle motors of an array of drives by
connecting a twisted pair to each drive. Use one strand of the
twisted pair to connect together Pin 9 of the options jumper block
of each drive. Use the other strand to connect together pin 10 of the
options jumper block of each drive. The maximum cable length is 6
feet (1.8 meters).
Installing a remote LED
-----------------------
If you want to attach a remote LED to your ST3283A drive, attach a
two-pin connector to Pins 13 and 14 of the Options jumper block.

Drive Orientation
=================
You can mount the drive in any orientation provided you do not mount
it more than 5* from a vertical or horizontal axis.
Note: Regardless of which set of holes you use, use only three
mounting screws.
Bottom mounting holes
---------------------
Use 6-32 UNS screws in three of the four available bottom mounting
holes.
Do not insert the bottom mounting screws more than 0.20 inches (6
turns) into the drive frame. If you use a screw that is too long, you
could damage the drive.
Side mounting holes
-------------------
Use 6-32 UNS screws in three of the six available side mounting
holes. Make sure your installation adheres to the following
guidelines:
- Do not use all three mounting holes on the same side of the
drive.
- Use one or both of the following: the side mounting hole near
the power connector or the side mounting hole (on the other
side of the drive) near the interface connector.
- Use at least one, but no more than two, of the other four side
mounting holes.
Do not insert side mounting screws more than 0.13 inches (4 turns)
into the drive frame. If you use a screw that is too long, you cold
damage the drive.
Connecting AT Interface Cable
-----------------------------
It may be easier to connect the cable before installing the drive
and fastening the drive mounting screws. Note the location of pin 1.
Power Connector
---------------
Make sure the system power switch is in the "off" position. Connect
a system power cable to the appropriate drive power connector:
either the standard 4-pin power connector or the 3-pin mini power
connector.

Overview
--------
The ST3283A drive is designed for AT (286, 386, and 486) systems. The
ST3283N drive is intended for IBM and compatible computers,
Macintosh, and other SCSI systems.
Low-level formatting
-------------------
St3283 family drives are low-level formatted at the factory to 512
bytes per sector. You do not need to low level AT drives. However,
SCSI drives may require low-level formatting when used with some
host adapters to optimize their performance in your system.
Installing the ST3283A
----------------------
The table below shows the recommended translation geometry for the
ST3283A. This geometry is printed on the drive top cover.
If the drive offered by the CMOS do not support the translation
geometry shown in the table below and your system does not support a
"user-defined" drive type, select a drive type in your systemj CMOS
with capacity less than or equal to 233.99 Megabytes, as shown under
"Formatted CMOS Megabytes".
Formatted MB Translation Geometry Formatted CMOS MB
245.36 CYL. 978 HEAD 14 SEC/TRACK 35 233.99
Installing the ST3283N
----------------------
The SCSI drive handles drive geometry and defect management inter-
nally. In AT systems with SCSI drives, select a CMOS drive type of
zero or the "no drive installed" option.
Maintenance and repair
----------------------
Seagate drives do not require any preventive maintenance. The head/
disc assembly is sealed and does not contain any user-serviceable
components. Tampering with the factory seal voids the warranty.
Radio and television interference
---------------------------------
This product complies with Class B limits for radio noise emissions
from computer equipmentas set in the radio interference regulations
of the Canadian Department of Communikations.
