The typical investment company, whether organized in the form of a trust, partnership, organized group, or corporation, is engaged primarily in the business of investing in securities. Of the various kinds of investment companies, four of the most important are open-end investment companies, closed-end investment companies, unit investment trusts, and issuers of variable annuities.
