Glossary of Stock Investing Terms: F

  • Float:

    The total number of outstanding shares available on the market.

  • Form 10K:

    A company's annual audited report filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, due within 90 days of the end of the company's fiscal year.

  • Form 10Q:

    A company's quarterly report filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, due within 45 days of the end of the company's quarter.

  • Fundamental analysis:

    A method of evaluating stocks based on fundamental factors, such as revenues, earnings, future growth, return on equity, profit margins, and so on, to determine a company's underlying value and potential for future growth.

  • Funds from operations (FFO):

    Used by real estate investment trusts (REITS) to define the cash flow from their operations. It is calculated by adding depreciation and amortization expenses to earnings, and can be represented as Funds From Operations Per Share. FFO/S should be used in lieu of EPS when evaluating REITs and other similar investment trusts.
