Calcipotriol or Dovonex is used to reduce skin plaque formation in psoriasis.
Calcipotriol or Dovonex is a synthetic vitamin D3 analog, which is able to reduce skin cell proliferation. It appears as effective as corticosteroid creams and ointment, but with fewer side effects - especially those side effects due to skin absorption. Tachyphylaxis or decreased responsiveness to therapy develops with corticosteroids, but not with Calcipotriol or Dovonex.
Calcipotriol or Dovonex is well tolerated and its side effects are confined to skin irritation - burning, itching, redness, dry skin, peeling, sun sensitivity. With time these side effects seem to moderate.
People who have sensitive skin should use Calcipotriol or Dovonex with caution.
Calcipotriol or Dovonex is using in combination with other types of therapy to treat psoriasis. It is often combined with ultra violet therapy.
