Abstract: "1 The purpose of this study was to correlate exercise induced changes of antioxidant enzymes with the distribution of mercury after mercury vapour exposure in mice. 2 Exercise training consisted of swimming (1 h/day for 5 days/week) for 9 weeks. After 9 weeks of training, swim-trained mice showed significantly elevated levels of catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (GSHpx) in their blood cells, CAT and GSHpx in their kidneys and SOD in the liver. 3 Exercised mice (Ex) and non-exercised mice (N.Ex) were exposed to mercury vapour (3.5 mg/m3) for 1 h. Mercury concentrations were assayed in the blood, brain, heart, lungs, liver and kidneys along with the mercury content of the entire body. The whole body content showed no significant difference in any measurement (immediately, 24 h and 48 h after mercury exposure) between the Ex and N.Ex groups. Mercury concentrations in the Ex group were significantly higher than the N.Ex group in the heart, whole blood, red blood cells and the brain at 24 and 48 h; and in plasma and kidneys at 24 h. 4 It was concluded that exercise training is a factor in distribution changes of mercury after exposure to mercury vapour, though it is not a factor in the total absorption and excretion of mercury."

Abstract: "The findings presented here suggest that mercury poisoning from dental amalgam may play a role in the etiology of many health disorders. A comparison of 125 health symptoms was made between a group of subjects with amalgams and a control group without amalgams. The 47 amalgam subjects reported a total of 45 % (P=0.0001) more health symptoms per subject compared to an age- and sex-matched control group of 48 nonamalgam subjects. Symptoms that were exhibited significantly more by the amalgam group were happiness, less peace of mind, poorer reading ability, foul breath, tremors, colds and respiratory infections, heart or chest pains, heartburn, menstrual difficulties, sudden anger, depression, irritability, tiring easily, tired in morning, hay fever, trouble with night vision, and a metallic taste in mouth. Most of these symptoms can be explained by mercury toxicity. The data suggest that inorganic mercury poisoning from dental amalgam does affect health."

Abstract: "Scores on the Beck Depression Inventory were compared for 25 women who had silver dental fillings (amalgams) and for 23 women without amalgams. Women with amalgams had significantly higher scores and reported more symptoms of fatigue and insomnia. Anger scores from the State-Trait Anger Inventory showed that the women with amalgams had statistically significantly higher mean scores on expressing anger without provocation and experiencing more intense angry feelings. The women without amalgams scored significantly higher on controlling anger, which suggested they invested more energy in monitoring and preventing the experience and expression of anger. Anxiety scores from the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory showed the women with amalgams scored significantly less pleasant, satisfied, happy, secure, and steady, and had a more difficult time making decisions. They had significantly higher Trait Anxiety scores. The women with amalgams also had significantly higher levels of mercury in the oral cavity before and after chewing gum. The study suggests that amalgam mercury may be an etiological factor in depression, excessive anger, and anxiety because mercury can produce such symptoms, perhaps by affecting the neurotransmitters in the brain."

NO Abstract IN ENGLISH AVAILABLE. Abstract IN SWEDISH FOLLOWS: "Det stora flertalet vuxna svenskar, 84%, har amalgamfyllningar i tanderna idag. Var tolfte svensk (8%) har tidigare haft amalgamfyllningar som nu tagits bort. Lika manga (8%) sager sig aldrig ha haft nagra amalgamfyllningar. Var femte vuxen svensk (21%) har tagit bort sina amalgamfyllningar, helt eller delvis, och nara var tionde (9%) funderar pa att gora det. Totalt innefattar detta 30 procent av alla, eller cirka 1 950 000 personer om man utgar ifran att det finns totalt 6,5 miljoner "kontaktbara" svenskar over 15 ar. "I forebyggande syfte" ar det vanligaste skalet till att man tar bort/funderar pa att byta ut sina amalgamfyllningar, var fjarde "tandlagnings-bytare" (26%) anger det skal (8% av alla vuxna svenskar), framforallt personer i den yngre medelaldern, mellan 30 och 49 ar. Plast ar det i sarklass vanligaste alternativet nar man byter ut sina gamla amalgam-fyllningar, varannan har bytt till plast (50%). Att byta till plast ar sarskilt vanligt i den grupp som byter tandfyllningar av forebyggande skal. Utover plast ar porslin, guld och proteser/lostander det man oftast bytt till. Tva av tre vuxna svenskar (67%) tror att det ar en nackdel att laga tanderna med amalgam. Var femte (21%) ar tveksam och kan inte ta stallning och drygt var tionde (12%) tror att det ar en fordel. Personer i ovre medelaldern, ar den enskilda grupp som oftare an andra vill ha ett omedelbart forbud mot att tanderna lagas med amalgam. Var sjunde person (14%) som tagit bort eller funderat pa att ta bort sina amalgamfyllningar anger att man har/har haft eller tror sig ha/ha haft, halsoproblem orsakade av amalgamet (4% av alla).
