Allergies Glossary: N-O

Nausea The feeling of wanting to throw up (vomit).

Nebulizer A device that delivers asthma medications. It directs air or oxygen under pressure through a solution of the drug, producing a mist for inhalation. Nebulizers produce a continuous mist, so the person doesn't have to coordinate breathing with the inhalation of medication.

Neonatal Period The first 4 weeks after birth.

Neonatologist Doctor who specializes in treating the diseases and disorders of newborn babies.

Nutrients Substances that are necessary for growth, development, and maintenance of life; food.

Obesity When people have 20 percent (or more) extra body fat for their age, height, sex, and bone structure. Fat works against the action of insulin. Extra body fat is thought to be a risk factor for a variety of diseases.

Obstructive Lung Diseases Disease due to narrowing of any portion of the airways that obstructs airflow; examples are COPD, cystic fibrosis, and asthma.

Occupational Asthma A reversible spasm of the airways caused by inhaling work-related particles that act as irritants or cause an allergic reaction.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids One of two basic categories of EFA's (Essential Fatty Acids). Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids include alpha-linolenic and eicosapentaenoic acid, which are found in fresh deep water fish, fish oil, certain vegetable oils, like canola, flaxseed, and walnut. See Essential Fatty Acids.

Omega-6 Fatty Acids One of the two basic categories of EFA's (Essential Fatty Acids). Omega-6 Essential Fatty Acids include linoleic and gamma-linolenic, which are found primarily in raw nuts, seeds, legumes and in unsaturated vegetable oils, such as primrose oil, sesame oil, soybean oil, and borage oil. Linoleic is the most essential EFA and is converted into non-beneficial trans-fatty acids by hydrogenation or the making of hard oils like margarine. See Essential Fatty Acids.

Otitis Media Inflammation of the middle ear, a common disease found in infants and children with allergic rhinitis.

Oxygen Colorless, odorless gas that makes up about 20 percent of the air we breathe. It is essential to life because it is used for the chemical reactions that occur in the cells of the body.
