Periodically, the Trendlines outlet near my home offers the Ryobi R600 and the
Makita 3HP (both plunge) on sale for ~ $170 and $200, respectively. I compared
both, and although I thought a few things on the Makita were a bit smoother, I
got the Ryobi because it was $30 cheaper *AND* came with the edge guide,
template guides, and a couple minor add---all extra with the Makita.
Thus far, I have used it mostly in a homemade router table. I haven't used the
plunge feature much yet. Seeems like plunge bits aren't very available. In the
table, I adjust it by turning the depth adjustment knob (very easy and precise)
not by messing with the plunge. I *really* like the 3hp. It hasen't coughed
once, even when I (foolishly) made it route through 3/4 in hard maple in one
go. One cutter on the bit disintegrated, but I didn't notice until I was
done---the router kept cranking. I expect to have this unit for a long time.
I've barely tapped its potential.
My recommendation: go for the big HP. You won't regret it.
