As I sit in the early dawn gazing at the beauty surrounding me,
I stare in awe and wonderment of how this came to be.
The horizon is now shrouded in a mass of blue-grey clouds,
with stripes of red and pink shooting across throughout.
Mt. Baker, in the distant haze, is silhouetted against the sky,
with its snow-capped peak, majestically rising high.
Small islands look like blobs scattered across the sea,
with each one waiting patiently to greet whatever may be.
A flock of geese flies over, honking their songs out loud,
"Look up, look up, we are strong and oh, so very proud!"
An Arbutus tree bends forward searching for some fun,
its red bark is peeling and curling in the sun.
From the corner slowly rising is a ball of orange and red,
the sun's brilliant brightness; its warmth it really spreads.
And afar, I hear the drone of a small boat speeding past,
it's in a mighty hurry, so it's going very fast.
But winding in the distance, is a ferry making its way,
it's slowly meandering, as if it's got all day.
As the silent water ripples with a shimmering glow,
I realize in an instant there is much that I don't know.
As bolts of lightning flash across the morning sky,
thunder rumbles and shakes, the land from way up high.
There are forces that are greater than even you or me,
through clouds and beyond, from a realm that we can't see.
There is so much contrast shared in this space of time,
it happened early this morning, which really blows my mind.
No doubt I'm being shown the power of a greater force,
and this morning I've been given just a short mini course.
My heart knows and feels there is so much more to come,
but I'll stay calm and strong, I won't turn my back or run.
For I am now aware of who and what I am,
and with confidence I'll focus as much as I can.
For in the bounty of nature are gifts to study and learn,
a universal guidance no matter which way I turn.
And I will pay attention to what I see and hear,
my Mayne Island surprise, is about dispelling fear.
