C/D Drive Select Jumper
------------------------
You can daisy-chain two drives on the AT-Bus interface. When daisy-
chaining two drives, specify one as the Master, the other as the
Slave, using the Drive Select (C/D) jumper pins on the drives:
To configure a drive as the Master (Drive 0), a jumper could be
installed at the C/D pins.
Samsung ships SHD-3121A/3122A hard disk drives from the factory with
the C/D jumper installed (Drive 0).
To specify a drive as the Slave (Drive 1), remove the C/D jumper.
Note. The order in which drives are connected in a daisy chain has no
significance.
DSP Drive Slave Present Jumper
-------------------------------
In combination with the current C/D jumper setting, the DSP jumper
implements one of two possible configurations:
When the drive is configured as a Master - that C/D jumper is
installed, the DSP jumper informs the drive that a Slave drive is
present. The DSP jumper should be installed on the Master drive only
if the Slave does not use the Drive Active/Slave Present (DASP-)
signal to indicate its presence.
When the drive is configured as a Slave, both the C/D and DSP jumpers
are not to be installed.
Faceplate LED Operation
-----------------------
Whenever the drive initiates the execution of a command, a green LED
on the faceplate light, and remains lit until the execution of the
command is complete or aborted.

The mounting holes on the SHD-3121A/3122A hard disk drive allow the
drive to be mounted in any orientation. For mounting, #6-32 UNC
screws should be used.
Caution: The printed circuit board (PCB) is very close to the
mounting holes. Do not exceed the specified length for the mounting
screw. The specified screw lenght allows full use of the mounting-
hole threads, while avoiding damaging or placing unwanted stress on
the PCB. To avoide stripping the mounting-hole threads, the maximum
torque applied to the screws must not exceed 8 Kg-cm (6.95 inch-
pounds).
Samsung ships the SHD-3121A/3122A hard disk drive with a faceplate
installed.
Ventilation
-----------
The SHD-3121A/3122A hard disk drive operates without a cooling fan,
provided the ambient air temperatur does not exceed (55*C). Any user-
designed cabinet must provide adequate air circulation, to prevent
the maximum temperature from beeing exceeded.
J1 AT-Bus Interface Connector
------------------------------
On the SHD-3121A/3122A hard disk drive, the AT-bus interface cable
connector (J1) is a 40-pin male Universal Header.
To prevent the posibility of its incorrect installation, the
connector should be keyed by removing Pin 20. This will ensure that
the connector cannot be installed upside down. All signals are
relative to pin 20.
For the mating female J1 connector, recommended cable connectors
include AMP receptacle P/N 1-499506-0, with strain relief: P/N
1-746193-0, without strain relief; or an equivalent. To key the cable
connectors, you must plug the connector that corresponds to Pin 20.
Other recommended part numbers for the mating connector include:
40-Pin Connector 3M 3417-7000, or equivalent
Strain Relief 3M 3448-2040, or equivalent
Flat Cable (Strained 28 AWG) 3M 3365-40, or equivalent
Flat Cable (Strained 28 AWG) 3M 3517-40 (shielded), or equivalent
J5 DC Power Connector
---------------------
The drives DC power connector (J5) is a 4-pin Elco Electronics
Connector P/N 01-9091-0408-05-808, or equivalent, mounted on the back
edge of the printed-circuit board (PCB).
Recommended connectors and their numbers:
4-Pin connector (P2): AMP P/N 1-480424-0, or equivalent
Loose-pice contacts: AMP P/N 61173-4, or equivalent
Strip contacts: AMP P/N 350078-4, or equivalent
pin 1 +12 VDC
pin 2 +12 V Return (Ground)
pin 3 + 5 V Return (Ground)
pin 4 + 5 VDC
Note: Labels indicate the pin numbers on the connector. Pins 2 and 3
are connected on the drive.

AT-Bus Interface Characteristics
--------------------------------
The AT-Bus interface supports one or two hard drives per adapter
board, and a maximum of two adapter boards - or a maximum of four
drives.
Electrical Characteristics
--------------------------
All signals are TTL-compatible - with logic one greater than 2.0
volts and less than 5.25 volts; and logic zero greater than 0.0 volts
and less than 0.7 volts.
Neither the adapter board not the drives require terminating
resistors.
Adapter Board Installation
==========================
The adapter board is a half-size board and can be installed in any
available 16-bit slot in an IBM PC-AT or compatible. Before install-
ing the adapter board, make sure that no other hard drive controller
resides at the primary hard drive address, 1F0H-F7H.
If a combination floppy and hard drive controller is present, the
hard drive controller functions on the floppy/hard drive controller
must be disabled. To disable hard drive controller functions on a
floppy/hard drive controller, follow these instructions:
- On a Western Digital WD1002-WA2 or WD1003-WA2 floppy/hard drive controller card:
1. Do not install jumpers on pin E5 and E6. Install jumpers on pins
E4 and E5, to ensure that the controller card resides at the
secondary address, 170H-177H, rather than at the primary, 1F0H-
1F7H.
2. Move the card from a 16-bit I/O slot to disconnect the IRQ14
output driver.
- On a DTC (Data Technology Corporation) floppy/hard drive controller card:
1. Install a jumper on pins W3.
2. Move the card from a 16-bit I/O slot to disconnect the IRQ14
output driver.
Connecting the Adapter Board and the Drive
------------------------------------------
Use the ribbon cable supplied with the adapter board to connect the
drive to the board. To ensure that the cable is plugged into the
adapter board and the drive correctly, there is a red wire at one
edge of the cable. To connect the drive to the board:
1. Note the number 1 printed on the board next to the connector. When
one end of the cable into the connector on the adapter board, make
sure the red wire on the cable is at the side of the connector
labeled 1.
2. When inserting the other end of the cable into the connector on
the drive, makes sure the red wire is at the inside edge of the
drive connector, next to the J5 power connector.
To complete the installation of the drive, secure it to the system
chassis using the mounting screw.
SAMSUNG SHD-3121A/3122A PRODUCT MANUAL 264 034001 BAAC
Introduction
------------
SHD (Samsung Harddisk Drives) 3121A/3122A hard disk drive is a
high performance, 1-inch-height form factor with the highest product-
ability and quality. This uses 3 inch rigid disks, and is available
with AT (Advanced Technology) interface.
The SHD-3121A/3122A features and embedded AT commands to optimize
system performance. Because the drive manages media defect and error
recovery internally, these operations are fully transparent to the
user.
Features
--------
Key feature of the SHD-3121A/3122A hard disk drive include:
- Low profile, 1-inch-height form factor

Error Register
--------------
The error register contains status information about the last
command by the drive. The contents of this register are valid only
when the error bit (ERR) in the Status Register is set to one -
except at power on or at the completion of the drive's internal
diagnostics, when the register contains a status code. When the error
bit in the Status Register is set to one, the host interprets the
Error Register bit as shown in following Table.
