Here's my 2 cents about a smaller sander.
I bought a Delta 1" Belt/8" Disc Sander (model 31-340)
last week for about $190 at a local home center store.
The belt is 42" long, and it comes with a 1/3 HP motor.
The 1" wide belt lets me sand odd shapes that would be tough with
a wider belt. I love it! The whole thing is built like a tank -- two
cast iron work tables and a massive cast frame.
I have already used it for some small projects and am VERY
satisfied with this tool. To be fair, this is the first belt/disc
sander I've used so I have nothing to compare it with.
During assembly, I had one small problem. An 'L' bracket on
the belt sander table was bent slightly, so I smacked it into
shape with a rubber mallet while holding it in my bench vise.
I also bought a Delta 10" benchtop band saw and am tickled
pink with it. The Delta tools have a 2 year warantee vs. Sears
1 year limit, by the way.
