I was having the same problem with my Sears router, the bit would
slip out while I was using the tool. I found that if I inserted the
bit as far as it would go, I would have the problem. I solved the problem
by inserting the bit all the was, then pulling it out about 1/8 in before
tightening the chuck. It seems that the bit may be flared a little bit and
so the bit slips out of the chuck if the flared portion is where the chuck
tightens on the bit. Sounds pretty hokey, but it worked for me.

As far as router tables go, you opinion is correct. I have the Sears
router table, and it is not big enough for very much. I am considering
building my own from plans that appeared in Fine Woodworking a while
back. If you were interested I could photocopy the article and send
it to you.
