My Craftsman radial arm saw came with a 3/4" particle board top,
and I like it -- it's stayed nice and flat for the 7 years or so
that I've had it. The fence is plywood, which (again) I like
because then I don't feel so bad about cutting so many weird angles
into it when doing compound cuts, and it's easy to replace. The
two boards that go behind the fence are also particle board, and
I wish they weren't, because those two screw adjusters that hold
them against the fence gradually work loose and I'm usually in the
middle of a cut when I figure it out.
I've seen zillions (well, maybe 3) of books and articles on squaring
the saw to the surface and to the fence, but (you're not gonna like
this) I eventually gave up and got a nice Delta 10" table saw...
Still use my radial saw for cutoffs and some dado stuff, but for
squareness I never got near what I can get from the table saw...
